Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are ancient practices that have been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of physical and mental health conditions. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body, while Chinese herbs use natural plant-based remedies to support healing and balance in the body.

Both practices are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, which view the body as an interconnected system that must be in balance to achieve optimal health. By using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, we aim to support your body's natural ability to heal itself, and help you live your best life by achieving a state of balance and wellness.

Acupuncture Q&A

Please reach out:  Wellness@acupuncture-smyrna.com  if you cannot find an answer to your question.

If you're new to acupuncture, it's normal to feel a little anxious about your first visit. But rest assured that it's a safe and relaxing procedure. Here's what you can expect during your initial acupuncture visit:

  1. Consultation: Before treatment, it is important for our acupuncturist to conduct a thorough consultation with the patient. This includes reviewing the your medical history, current symptoms and health concerns, any medications you are taking and lifestyle. By gathering this information, our acupuncturist can develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. Then the acupuncturist will explain how acupuncture works and answer any questions you may have.
  2. Examination: Our acupuncturist may also examine your tongue and pulse to get a better understanding of your body's condition. We may also use other diagnostic techniques, such as palpation or observation, to assess any imbalances in your body.
  3. Treatment: Once the acupuncturist has assessed your condition, they will begin the treatment by inserting thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on your body. You may feel a slight prick or tingling sensation, but the needles shouldn't cause any severe pain. You'll then lie still for 30-45 minutes while the needles work their magic.
  4. Follow-up: After the treatment, the acupuncturist may recommend further sessions to continue your treatment. They may also recommend herbal remedies, dietary changes, or lifestyle modifications to support your healing.

It's important to note that the number of sessions you'll need depends on the severity of your condition and how well your body responds to treatment. Some people see results after just one session, while others require several sessions before they notice a significant improvement.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. Many people wonder whether acupuncture hurts, and the answer is not a simple yes or no.

First, it's important to understand that everyone experiences pain differently. What feels painful to one person may not feel painful to another. However, most people report that acupuncture is not a painful experience. The needles used in acupuncture are very thin, typically no thicker than a strand of hair. They are designed to be as painless as possible.

When the needles are inserted, you may feel a slight prick or tingling sensation. Some people describe it as a dull ache or pressure. However, this sensation should not be painful. In fact, many people find acupuncture to be relaxing and even pleasant.

There may be some discomfort associated with acupuncture if the needles are placed in sensitive areas or if you are particularly sensitive to pain. However, if you feel pain during your acupuncture session, it's important to let your acupuncturist know. They may be able to adjust the placement of the needles or use a different technique to make you more comfortable.

It's also worth noting that the goal of acupuncture is not to cause pain. Instead, it's a holistic practice that aims to restore balance and promote healing in the body. The insertion of the needles is just one aspect of the treatment, which may also include massage, heat therapy, or herbal remedies. Studies have shown that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for pain, particularly chronic pain conditions such as back pain, osteoarthritis, and headaches.

In conclusion, acupuncture is generally not a painful experience. While there may be some discomfort associated with the insertion of needles, most people find it to be a relaxing and even pleasant experience. If you are considering acupuncture for pain relief, it's worth giving it a try to see how your body responds.

After your first acupuncture treatment, you may experience a variety of different sensations and effects. Here are some things that you can expect:

  1. Improved relaxation: Many people find acupuncture to be a deeply relaxing experience, and you may feel more relaxed after your treatment.
  2. Improved sleep: Acupuncture can help regulate the body's natural sleep cycles, so you may find that you sleep better after treatment.
  3. Reduced pain: Acupuncture is often used to treat pain, and you may experience a reduction in pain after your treatment.
  4. Slight soreness or bruising: It is common to experience some slight soreness or bruising at the site of the needle insertion points, but this should go away within a day or two.
  5. Possible emotional release: Acupuncture can sometimes stir up emotions, and you may find that you feel more emotional after treatment, but this should also go away within a day or two.

It is important to remember that everyone's experience with acupuncture is different, and you may experience different effects after your first treatment. Your acupuncturist will be able to talk with you about what to expect and answer any questions you may have.

The number of acupuncture treatments a person needs can vary depending on the condition being treated, its severity, and the individual's response to treatment. Generally, acute conditions may require fewer treatments, while chronic conditions may require ongoing treatment.

For many conditions, a course of treatment will involve an initial series of treatments, typically ranging from 4 to 12 sessions, scheduled over several weeks or months. After the initial series of treatments, some people may benefit from ongoing maintenance treatments to help prevent symptoms from returning, while others may only need occasional treatments as needed. .

It is important to work with your acupuncturist to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals. They will be able to recommend a course of treatment based on your individual condition, symptoms, and health history. Additionally, they may adjust the treatment plan as needed based on your progress and response to treatment.

Acupuncture is generally considered a safe and low-risk form of therapy when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. However, like any medical treatment, acupuncture can have potential side effects.

The most common side effects of acupuncture include:

  1. Soreness: After an acupuncture treatment, it is common to feel some soreness at the site where the needles were inserted. This typically goes away within a few hours to a day.
  2. Bruising: Sometimes, people may experience bruising at the site of needle insertion, particularly if they are taking blood-thinning medications or have a bleeding disorder.
  3. Fatigue: It is not uncommon for some people to feel tired or fatigued after an acupuncture session.
  4. Dizziness: Some people may experience dizziness or lightheadedness during or after acupuncture.
  5. Infection: While rare, there is a risk of infection if acupuncture is not performed by a licensed acupuncturist or healthcare providers without proper training on doing acupuncture such as M.D, chiropractor or physical therapist.

It is important to discuss any potential risks or side effects with your acupuncturist before beginning treatment. As well as find a qualified practitioner. They can also provide you with tips on how to minimize any discomfort or side effects you may experience.

Whether acupuncture is a good option for you depends on your specific health condition and overall health status. Acupuncture has been shown to be safe and effective for a wide range of health conditions, including pain, infertility, and anxiety, among others.

It is important to note that acupuncture is a complementary therapy, meaning it is typically used in conjunction with conventional medical treatments. It is always a good idea to talk to a licensed acupuncturist to determine if acupuncture is appropriate for your specific health needs.

Additionally, if you have a fear of needles, you may want to consider other forms of alternative medicine. Although acupuncture needles are thin and typically cause little to no pain, it is understandable that some individuals may have reservations about receiving treatment.

Overall, acupuncture can be a valuable option for individuals seeking complementary therapies for their health conditions and overall well beings.

Chinese herbal medicine is a therapeutic approach that involves the use of various herbs, plants, and minerals to prevent or treat a wide range of health conditions. It is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which emphasizes the balance of qi (life force energy) in the body.

According to TCM, Chinese herbal medicine works by restoring balance and harmony in the body. Each herb has a specific function and can be combined with other herbs to create a customized formula that addresses the unique needs of each patient. The herbs may be taken in various forms, including teas, powders, pills, and tinctures. As with any type of medicine, Chinese herbal medicine may cause side effects in some people. However, the risk of side effects is generally low when the herbs are prescribed by a qualified practitioner and taken as directed. In addition, Chinese herbal medicine is often used in combination with acupuncture, dietary therapy, and other natural healing methods to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Chinese herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide range of health conditions, including digestive disorders, respiratory problems, allergies, skin disorders, gynecological issues, and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. It may also be used to support overall health and wellness, and to prevent the onset of chronic disease. The specific herbs and formulas used will depend on the individual needs of each patient, as determined by a qualified practitioner.

There are several reasons why some acupuncture clinics may not accept insurance:

  1. Reimbursement rates: Insurance companies may not reimburse acupuncture clinics at a rate that covers the full cost of providing the service. This can lead to financial losses for the clinic.
  2. Administrative burden: The process of submitting claims to insurance companies and managing billing and payments can be time-consuming and complex.
  3. Limited coverage: Not all insurance plans cover acupuncture, and those that do may have restrictions on the number of treatments or conditions that are covered. Some clinics may choose not to accept insurance to avoid confusion or disappointment among patients who have limited or no coverage.
  4. More time to focus on patients: Acupuncture clinics that do not take insurance can provide high-quality care for their patients. By not being bound to insurance companies' rules and regulations, clinics focus more on the individual needs of each patient, since the clinic does not have to worry about insurance reimbursement, they can schedule longer appointment times. This allows for more thorough consultations, treatment, and patient education, such as how to maintain a healthy lifestyle: dietary changes, stress reduction techniques, and exercise recommendations.
  5. Specialization: Some acupuncture clinics may focus on treating specific conditions or using specialized techniques that are not covered by insurance.

It is important to note that while we do not accept insurance, many others do. If you are interested in acupuncture and have insurance coverage, we can either send you an invoice/superbill after the treatment, which you might get a reimbursement after you submit the claim by yourself, or give your insurance company a call or go to their website to find a in network practitioner. We can also refer you to some other practitioners might work with your insurance. Click here to contact us.
